About this deal

Taking the fairly standard ‘group trapped’ movie trope, and pitting squaddies against werewolves, he crafted a tight, scary, gory and funny film that he’s yet to better. While An American Werewolf in London may be the very best of werewolf movies (in my opinion of course) Dog Soldiers came out of nowhere to become an instant classic. Cinematographer Sam McCurdy shot Dog Soldiers on 16 mm film (in the Super-16 format) using Arriflex cameras with spherical lenses. Once the barn has been destroyed, Megan reveals that not only were there no werewolves in the barn, but she is part of the Uath family and a werewolf as well. This horror comedy may seem a mile away from where Marshall next went, but there is a reason Dog Soldiers works, and it is in fact a bloody entertaining film.

The 4K UHD set from Second Sight is great; the native 4K image, with Dolby Vision, is stunning: a well detailed, clean, naturally coloured picture with deep blacks, with a beautiful filmic nature, including grain, and has never looked so good. Marshall also put together a great effects crew, and thanks to his insistence on using practical makeup rather than CGI, the film hasn’t dated as badly as some other werewolf films of the era. dba Freestar (“Freestar”) for the purposes of placing certain advertising on the site, and Freestar will collect and use certain data for advertising purposes. Werewolves vs Soldiers – Making of Dog Soldiers feature, with Neil Marshall, producers Christopher Figg and Keith Bell, actors Sean Pertwee, Kevin McKidd, Darren Morfitt, Leslie Simpson and Emma Cleasby, special effects artist Bob Keen. It’s a fine example of how a talented director can take a clever concept and overcome the limitations of a minuscule budget, and it proves just how versatile that the werewolf genre really can be. Bassett was in talks to direct, [38] but by July 2006, Rob Green, who previously directed the horror film The Bunker, was set to direct and said he and Miller had written a story in which "Some of the characters actually love being a werewolf because they are so powerful – the ultimate killing machine … [I]t's a fun spin on the traditional angle that being a werewolf is a curse which damns the person no matter what. The 4k does have a ton more detail though and the colours are a lot better overall so it was never an issue with the film being on 16mm. The US blurays were based on cinema prints with the 2009 First Look Studios release being very rough while the 2015 Shout release was marginally better but screwed by changes to colour temperatures and brightness in many day for night shots. During a routine training mission in the Scottish Highlands, a small squad of British soldiers find a wounded Special Forces captain and the bloody remains of his team. The film was shot in Luxembourg due to tax deals and having access to crew and student facilities provided by a company based in Luxembourg. I’ve been a fan of Clover’s work since 1992, but I’ve never though of Dog Soldiers in these terms before, so I’m grateful for what Peirse has accomplished here. The soldiers soon realize that they are surrounded by a pack of blood-lusting werewolves, and that they are about to face the fight of their lives. The missing commentary would be nice, but there are probably legal reasons for its omission, and Peirse’s commentary more than compensates for it. In Dog Soldiers, however, the lack of ammunition is quickly solved, and the film morphs instead into a rural siege story similar to Straw Dogs—although in this case, the real twist is that the home that the soldiers are defending isn’t their own, so it’s actually an inversion of the dynamic from Peckinpah’s film. The defense by Neil Marshall about original colour just doesn't match what I (and others) saw in the cinema and which the UK DVD matches. On a routine training mission in the Scottish Highlands, a small squad of British soldiers come across the bloody remains of a Special Forces team with a sole survivor. The Second Sight 4k remastered Dog Soldiers blu ray uses the original film negative (that was thought to be lost) that Neil Marshall found.Where the 4k does come up short is in black levels, as they are more grey and with film grain being heavy at times due to the 16mm film.
