Our Viking resources and activities can really help you engage your children in KS2 history lessons. Take a look at this Interactive Comprehension Activity.

In Viking times, ships were so important that the chiefs and the richest nobles were either burned or buried with their ship. Viking longships were long, slender boats that the Vikings used to travel on the seas. They have a long history in Scandinavia and were used as early as the fourth century BC. The Design of Viking Longships For other 3D and AR models to support your teaching on Vikings, take a look at the History collection. What is a Viking Longship? The model for the Sea Stallion is an archaeological find, the Viking ship Skuldelev 2, that was excavated in 1962. It was originally built by Scandinavians in Dublin in the year 1042 but ended its life after many years service as a part of the barrier constructed 15 km north of Roskilde, the royal seat of Denmark at that time. Thanks to decades of research it has been possible to reconstruct both the original appearance of the ships and the methods that were employed by the shipbuilders in Dublin almost a thousand years ago.To further develop your children’s learning on the Vikings and longboats, why not use this reading comprehension activity alongside the longboat template, so children can better understand why the Vikings used longboats when sailing and the kinds of things they had on the ship. An engaging Viking activity for your lessons, this Viking longboat template is a perfect craft activity to introduce to your children. Other resources on Viking longboats The shallow draft (distance between the water and the lowest point of the vessel) meant that longships could navigate through shallow waters with a depth of just 1 metre. This allowed the Vikings to land on beaches before jumping out to fight. Of course, a plan is also included for the model which describes things in greater detail, including the rigging stages. This is also typically easy to understand and also contains the shapes for a good number of kit parts, so if you were to screw up, then with a little extra timber, you can right your wrongs. Longships were long elegant craft used by The Vikings to cross the North Sea, first on raiding missions and later to explore and settle in Engand, Ireland, Iceland and beyond. They were a wooden construction with a shallow Draft which meant they could be rowed up shallow rivers as well as across the sea, powered by oars and their large square woollen sail. They could also land on beaches and were light enough to be carried when necessary and tipped upside down to use as a temporary shelter. In the oldest Viking stories, known as sagas, the warriors would travel incredible distances in their boats and used chants to keep up morale when the rain and wind were beating down on them. Often, their Viking sailing chants would be used to tell stories about their favourite battles or adventures and to tell the stories of their gods as well as how their world was created.I've not got windows so was remote desktopping to a windows machine and the lag dampened my enthusiasm for exploring) In good weather conditions, it's thought that longships could reach speeds of up to 17 knots (though this varied from ship to ship). And then get your children to start cutting the planks - you could calculate how much wider the planks have to be amidships, compared to at the ends (using a ratio of the frame section girths), so that all of the planks are full length. If you don't like it, no hard feelings we'll make it right. Meanwhile her brother had chosen to use the Hobbycraft designs suggested by their teachers - and also needed the occasional extra hand.

I've seen the amount of skill involved for making display wooden models like the Drakar, I'm not aiming for something worthy of museum display - just something a tad more boat shaped. Suitable for narrow rivers and choppy seas, yet light enough for carrying across land, the innovative and versatile design of the longship helped the Vikings on their raids across Europe and beyond. Their advanced shipbuilding made their extensive travels possible, taking them to far-flung places such as North America and Central Asia. Please note, this is "do it yourself-DIY" kit, you will need to assemble the boat and to paint it yourself! It might be easier to do this by cutting out the stations at the scale you want, and then spiling the planks manually by eye on the model, rather than trying to work it out in a CAD program?
