About this deal

We will learn what each color wire means. Understanding color coding will give you a good understanding of how the thermostat actually functions. A 2 wire thermostat is connected between line and the switched line terminal on the boiler. When heat is required, the thermostat connects these two wires together, applying the full mains voltage to the switched line terminal. This activates the boiler. Now you start reconnecting the wire by wire. Having a photo of the old thermostat is very helpful here. There are two ways of how to know where each wire goes: LearnMetrics has designed this guide as that little help. We will cover everything you need to know about thermostat wiring; including where does each color wire goes. You should typically see an 18-gauge solid core wire. The most common configuration is five wires. However, you could see as few as two and many as ten.

When boilers are first installed, there is normally a link between the two thermostat terminals to allow testing of the boiler before a thermostat is wired in. This link must be removed and the thermostat connected in it's place - otherwise the heating will run constantly. This will prove very expensive, and will result in the property being excessively hot. If your O or B terminal shares a label with another wire — typically W —identify whether you have a heat pump system or not. A heat pump runs your compressor for both heating and cooling. If you don’t know your system type, place this wire in the W terminal. If you have a heat pump system, put it in the O/B terminal. In addition to heating (2 wire thermostats) and C or fan (3 wire thermostats), 4 wire thermostats include the cooling wire, usually in blue or yellow color. Here are the wires in 4 wire thermostats with terminal codes and color codes (also referred to as 4 wire thermostat wiring color code):microcomputer control and strong anti interference】adopting microcomputer control chip, the temperature is accurately detected by the high accurate sensor of the thermostat. this intelligent temperature controller uses a highly reliable single chip microcomputer, which has strong anti interference and is more convenient to use. After you remove the old thermostat, take the new thermostat are put it in the exact same place as the old thermostat. The wires you have fixed on the wall have to be pushed through the hole in the new thermostat.

This thermostat is very simple to use, you just have to connect the thermostat to your Wi-Fi network and then you can access the web interface through your computer or smartphone. Old manual thermostats don’t require a C-wire. Programmable and smart thermostat do; this C-wire needs as 24V power source. Any other source – be it 12V battery, or even 110-120V AC voltages, requires a transformer/inverter that will turn any electricity into 24V DC source. Digital thermostats are normally 2 wire types, and usually have batteries inside to operate the electronics. These have a significant disadvantage that when the batteries run down, the central heating no longer works. There is also the added cost of replacement batteries. Mains voltage 3 wire thermostat All combination boilers should have a room thermostat fitted. Without one, there will be no way for the air temperature to be controlled. Volt free terminals The 2 wire thermostat for line voltage systems is technically known as single pole thermostat (and the 4 wire version is known as double pole thermostats). When it comes to low voltage systems, a 2 wire thermostat is usually known as a “heat only thermostat” and is used for systems like a gas furnace (with only a heating option). A 2 wire thermostat can not be used for HVAC systems with a cooling option, or heating systems with multi stages or a heat pump. Wiring & Color Code

These thermostats are typical for heat pumps: HVAC devices that can cool and heat. To produce the airflow, a fan is needed (green wire). Y terminals are for the connection to the compressor relay. It most often wires to the air handler (indoor split-system unit). Y1 is for ordinary or one-stage cooling; this is what most of us have at home. Y wire with “Y1” code is usually yellow-colored. You can read more about what size wires you need for air conditioners here. HVAC technicians know the color-coding by heart; they can just remove any Honeywell thermostat, replace it with the new one and reconnect the terminals. Put the new motherboard in the place of the old one, and pull the wires through the 3 wire thermostat. If your thermostat doesn’t look exactly like this, or even anything like this, don’t worry. We just need to get a grip of what each color wire is and what it does.

B” is for reversing valve heating. Some producers like Rheem energizes the reversing valve when the heating mode is on in heat pumps. A dark blue “B” wire is needed for the t-stat terminal. Thermostat Green Wire (“G” Wire) Some thermostats have a neon indicator built in, which is internally connected in parallel with the accelerator heater. This is illuminated when the thermostat is on (calling for heat). Other information Earth connections to thermostats The thermostat comes with lots of energy-saving modes which will save you a lot of money on your electricity bill. The most important thing to remember is that the temperature settings should be changed at least once every 7 days to make sure the thermostat is functioning properly.wire thermostats are most commonly used to control the heaters; boilers and hot water heaters in particular. The 3 wires you will find usually have codes R, G, and W.
