I don't really know why this edition has been published, the original first coming to light in 1989. It wouldn't have been very interesting to the majority of thinking people then, even less now, and there is a 'dated' feeling (if it's possible to say so about 'ghosts') not only in the presentation but in the incidents it purports to present. Join The UK Ghost Hunts Team on an investigation in some of the most haunted locations around the UK, from majestic manor houses and haunted hospitals to petrifying prisons and chilling castles. Denise Summers who read books that nobody should read just for fun, since her life turned into a living hell. The "ghost" was slightly interesting, at least, but she wasn't nearly strong enough to carry the rest of the tale, or possibly, the tale would have been served a great deal more by glossing the early debunking stuff and focusing on the manor entirely. The Setting - It seems obvious to count the setting as a major plus point in a haunted house novel, but there is something undeniably creepy about old mansions in the British countryside. For some reason I'm always more willing to believe in spooky going's on if they're said to be happening in the middle of nowhere and the Borely Rectory fits that description well.

I read the kindle version and it was peppered with typos. Also the 'continuity' was often incorrect. The whole book is badly in need of a decent editor to get rid of these numerous amateur errors and problems, and give it a good tidy up. Here are the accounts of teenage girls who trifled with Satanism and séances, only to fall victim to the most horrifying of spirits… A village terrorized by a murderous, unstoppable force too evil to be anything but Hell-born… A family’s home besieged by the relentless, destructive fury of poltergeists… The real facts behind the house of horrors in Amityville. a powerful 48-hours poltergeist explosion in Lindley Street, afecting the Goodin Family and eclipsing the world news during that time.

His soft blue eyes, sitting under a mop of blond hair, had all the understanding of a turkey waiting for the Boxing Day sales.” If you're a fan of spooky tales, of things that go bump in the night, of gothic fiction, detective stories, or hell, if you just fancy a good old yarn around a camp fire that will keep you wondering from start to finish, give this one a go. I can't recommend it highly enough. It's a five from me, and it's found its way on to my favourite books shelf; I'm sure it will for you too. The Victorian era was probably the high-point of belief in spiritualism - who doesn't picture all those fine gentleman and corseted ladies participating in seances, dabbling with Ouija boards, tilting tables and automatic writing? It's probably no coincidence that this peak in belief coincided with the rise of science as we understand it - perhaps this emerging insistence that the universe could be codified and classified and explained also gave rise to some kind of reaction against it, this belief that there were some things beyond explanation?

The book itself claims Borley is surrounded by 'Essex marshes' but that's not true - it stands on a small hill (Suffolk is fairly flat) and is surrounded by arable fields.Staying in Suffolk over the New Year I began reading this book, and one afternoon we drove to Borley again. Well, I had to really! the deadly history of Dudleytown, a village that no longer exists but its dark legacy still can be felt. I love the Victorian period. It was a time of great invention and creativity. I've always loved stories about the paranormal so I was sold on this book when I read the blurb. If you're interested in spirits and mediums this is a must read. Well written and researched Blum looks at the history of the Society of Psychical Research and its key membership. Through their personal stories and obsessions there are many questions raised.
