About this deal

I am fully committed to colored pencil portraiture. I don’t use the same pencils but I feel knowledgeable enough to replicate your color pallet. I am amazed at the weird responses in this string. We are not doing painting by numbers after all! Many of my subjects are English & even cream is too dark for their faces. I really appreciate the tips you imparted above & I feel ready to implement them. Thanks Reply Then start in the darkest area of the face. It is always easier to make dark areas even darker afterwards instead of making light areas lighter. For example, if you start in the light area and it turns out to be too dark, it is difficult to touch up with an eraser later. Use a dark shadow color to paint the darkest areas. Grab one of the midtones you used on step two and layer this color over the section where the midtones meet the darkest area and blend the colors together. Color in circular motions to avoid any lines and streaks. Step 4:

Please list the names and numbers of the pencils pictured. The directions cannot be followed without that information. Reply To help prevent breakage, try using a softer touch with the pencil, carefully pressing hard only when you need to achieve a deeper saturation. 9 Best Skin Tone Colored Pencil Sets Rank When you’re working on fine detail and shading in a portrait, every line counts. The division between an eyebrow and the bridge of the nose, or the top of the lip to the tip of the nose, are vital to get right.

The only negative to this set is that you will find that there will be giant color gaps. If you want to do anything that isn’t human skin color, then you will have to resort to a different set of colored pencils. Think of this set as a complementary set to your standard, larger set that you typically use. Start your drawing with a first layer, which should serve as a base. I used the brightest pencil for this. Choose a neutral color. In my case it was a light, warm shade of grey. Try to apply this first layer very evenly to dark areas and leave the light areas lighter or completely white.

The same goes for skin tones. There are warm and cool undertones, and there are pink and yellow (or olive) undertones. These undertones play a huge role in the way our skin looks, and if you don’t take them into account, your portrait will look off. In the shaded areas of your portrait, begin to lightly apply the darker colors for the selection of pencils that you put aside earlier. This will help to enclose the piece and create a sort of boundary between the extreme light and dark colors. First, let’s identify the hue of skin color. We’ll take a fair caucasian as an example. If you had to name skin color, what would it be?

Read on for tips for creating skin tones with colored pencils.

There’s something to be said for strokes and their role in blending colors. When you apply your first soft layers, you want to use a combination of different directional strokes (overlapping diagonal, horizontal and vertical strokes on top of each other). Around layers three through six, you can start painting in a circular motion to conceal any harsh lines in previous layers. General tones But you will need to go with the 36-count set at a minimum (and preferably the 72-count set) to have enough of a “starting point” color selection. In particular, we have found that Flesh Pink, Salmon, Copper Beech, Felt Grey, and Pink Madder Lake colors are good for starting with (and most are only available in the 36 and 72-count sets). Once you have established what sorts of color you will need, compare that to what colored pencil you have at your fingertips. Figure out where the major color gaps are. These areas will require you to get creative by blending/layering to achieve the desired effect. If you compare CYM with BYR colours you can guestimate where each colour sits on the colour wheel. Compared to Blue, Cyan leans more towards the greens which is a cool colour. The other way around: Compared to cyan, the blue we use in BYR leans more to the red. Magenta leans more towards violet and the yellow from CYM leans more towards the green rather than orange, which the yellow in BYR does. I’ll go more in-depth in an upcoming article. When you are satisfied with the colours and shades, take your lightest coloured pencil (white or grey) and move it in a curved motion over darker areas that you would like to appear “ softer“. The pencil will blend the underlying colours and make the surface appear smooth. Repeat the same for the light areas of the face with a white pencil.

Another good book with some helpful tips is “ Lifelike Drawing in Colored Pencil” by Lee Hammond. This book is a bit broader as it applies to methods to be used in drawing other scenes such as landscapes, flowers, buildings, etc. However, it does have some great and simple tips related to skin tones as well. We’ve included this set for the serious artists who are willing to go to a higher price point to get the best quality. When it comes to blending, shading, and overall technique, these pencils can’t be beat. Maybe YOU should shut up and have several seats! There’s no point of making a tutorial if the names are not listed. It is frustrating! ReplyIf you noticed some undertones (blues, greens, etc.), this is the time to add them. LIGHTLY apply these undertones in the necessary areas. Your portrait may resemble more of a Halloween mask than a realistic portrait right now. That is OK! You will start to blend in these colors in the later steps You wouldn’t want to be working on these fine details and then have your pencil tip shatter, leaving you with a large, dark stamp of color where the broken pencil tip hit the paper.
