About this deal

Meet the most notorious serial killer of all time, Jack the Ripper - and meet the vast and vibrant communities of Victorian London where his foul deeds gave birth to the modern era. The award-winning bestseller From Hell, often ranked among the greatest graphic novels of all time, takes on haunting new dimensions in From Hell: Master Edition, enhanced with impressionistic hues by Eddie Campbell himself. While the artwork was impressive, too often it felt muddled and messy combined with the excruciating levels of gore and Moore’s legendarily dense layers of text. S ir William Gull was a prominent Victorian era physician who amongst many contributions to clinical medicine is credited with the classic description of anorexia nervosa and the aetiology of myxoedema.

What often goes overlooked in Moore’s work are tiny slivers of humanity bravely shining despite them.Reddit and its partners use cookies and similar technologies to provide you with a better experience.

It is difficult not to examine its pages without the scrutinisation and mapping of the human object described by Foucault in his book The Birth of the Clinic. Jack acts as "midwife to the 20th century", delivering the next 100 years of Holocaust, serial killing and media rapaciousness as he extracts his last victim's heart. There is a similar effect with the other most prominent landmarks; Cleopatra’s Needle, and Christchurch Spitalsfield. Not only are the readers learning about Gull’s personal beliefs and world view, it is much clearer to see what is going on inside his mind. Despite how it might seem, the decision to tell this story in black and white was purely one of economics. However, in the Master Edition Campbell introduces blue skies, fog and smog to the landscape and gives color to the surrounding buildings.

We readily see how the pernicious Victorian society portrayed in From Hell allows Gull to behave with impunity whereas in the reality of today there is some acceptance that within a dysfunctional system ‘there is no process, procedure or regulation which can prevent malpractice on its own’. If you want a fantastical read, rich with well written characters, and a plot out of left-field, this will more than satisfy that urge.As striking as the imagery was, I’m inclined to agree with Eddie Campbell in an interview with Previews Magazine who said that after reading the Master Edition the original will feel like viewing it through a woolly sweater.

It remains intriguing, particularly within the medical community, that Gull was one of the numerous suspects implicated with the notorious and unsolved Whitechapel murders ascribed to Jack the Ripper.Gruesome take on a classic tale, some chapters were very slow and really dragged but that didn't stop me from enjoying another genius novel by Alan Moore. He is also working on his first professional forays into fiction with Maxine Spaulding Citizen of the World: Holiday in Cambodia and The Fire From Heaven. It roundly manages to condemn many aspects of bigotry, racism, hate, and imperialism; entertain with a mystery married to philosophy and meta physic wondering, and the very nature of the genre.
