About this deal

Overview: A great book detailing the rich history of Japanese hand tools and their importance in Japanese culture. Overview: No other author has described the species, uses and grades of timber used in Japanese woodworking like Mechtild Mertz.

I have spent much of my short life exploring the intersection of need and creating beauty and harmony.

Some of my earliest memories include attempting to draw similar house plans in the dark, in notebooks, after mom’s lights out. Aunque incluye fotografías, dada su complejidad es imposible aprender a hacerlas sin mucho más detalle y explicaciones paso a paso. My main impression throughout reading this book has been one of head shaking and disbelief, and sheer amazement at the ingenuity of Japanese carpenters current and old. The Art of Japanese Joinery is his first book and is an amalgamation of his knowledge and talent in joinery.

The beauty of the temples alone is enough to respect them but I would love to have an inside look at the construction in this book. This is truly disappointing, as it seems unlikely we will ever see the skill, scale, and grandeur represented by these temples ever again, unless those still standing are well-preserved and maintained. Presenting 48 joints, selected from among the several hundred known and used today, this book will please anyone who has ever been moved by the sheer beauty of wood. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. However, Brown does a fine job of attempting the lead the reader through the process of the Japanese carpenter, and of the construction process itself, and it is truly fascinating. A native of New Orleans, he has lived in Japan since 1985 and is currently on the sculpture faculty of Musashino Art University in Tokyo. Azby Brown is a widely published author and authority on Japanese architecture, design, and environment, whose groundbreaking writings on traditional Japanese carpentry, compact housing, and traditional sustainable practices are recognized as having brought these fields to the awareness of Western designers and the general public.

I cannot even begin to imagine the scene of a temple construction when some of these intricate buildings were first built, 500-1000+ years ago, with nary a chainsaw, sawmill, crane, or power tool in sight. This introduction to Japanese joinery not only delves into the unique history and development of Japanese carpentry, but also reveals many secrets of Japanese joinery. There’s a lot of mystique surrounding Japanese carpentry and temple construction, and for good reason. The author describes in detail, and with numerous architectural plans and drawings, the influence of the anatomy of the Japanese human body on traditional units of measurement and on house construction. This introduction of Japanese joinery delves into the history and development of Japanese carpentry, and it also reveals many secrets of Japanese joinery. In addition to The Genius of Japanese Carpentry, he has written Small Spaces (1993), The Japanese Dream House (2001), The Very Small Home (2005), and Just Enough: Lessons in living green from traditional Japan (2010). If you're looking for a book on traditional Japanese building construction then it falls short, too. With the clear isometric projections complementing the 64 pages of stunning photographs, even the weekend carpenter can duplicate these bequests from the traditional Japanese carpenter, which can be applied to projects as large as the buildings for which most of them were originally devised or to projects as small as a sewing box.

There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase, a SQL command or malformed data. The book briefly covers some of the principles which traditional carpenters adhere to, and the personal history and background of Nishioka himself, all of which is very interesting but not too-deeply covered. The book continues on to design theory, the usage of wood, traditional tools, and finally, the assembly and erection of the Picture Hall, a massive and ornate temple at the Yakushiji compound. I am a second generation homebuilder and woodworker and am intensely fascinated with alternative ways of building that pay more respect to the materials we use.

If you read the journals of 18th Century woodworkers you’ll find they were unbelievably fast —using only hand tools.
