This rare, and outstanding tomato yields 3-4" slightly flattened dark-red (mahogany-colored) slightly maroon, beefsteak tomatoes with deep green shoulders. The thin skin that contributes to their fine eating quality can also predispose them to being damaged more easily than thicker-skinned varieties. Fantastic, intense, slightly salty taste (which is great for those not wanting to add salt to their tomatoes). Craig LeHoullier stabilized this rogue heirloom in 1995, originating from the popular old heirloom from Tennessee, Cherokee Purple. Turning yellow at about 90 days, this high-yielding variety is an excellent choice for the vegetable garden! Varieties bearing that mutation which have been favored by industry since the 1940s – that is, tomatoes which are not heirlooms – feature fruits with lower levels of carotenoids and a decreased ability to make sugar within the fruit. The six- to eight-ounce round fruits are delicious straight from the garden and sliced onto a plate.
