About this deal

The funny thing about the Hogan numbers is that they've been interpreted as evidence that this camera is making a huge impact on the company's bottom line. There have been a few cases when it has misfocused, even with contrasty subjects in situations that shouldn't have posed any significant challenges for the camera. The resolution increase from 16-24MP was expected (and overdue) but the addition of sensor stabilization, a touch-sensitive screen, and the removal of the built-in flash make the GR III a very different photographic tool, albeit one that should feel instantly familiar to GR / II fans.

I sorta preferred Fujifilm’s film simulations and I do still love them but over the years, I had started to appreciate a more neutral less saturated rendering at times. The boosted sensitivity combined with the image stabilization system can in some way compensate for the lack of the flash. What makes a GR a GR has largely remained consistent across two decades, and that is pretty impressive given how fickle the camera market can be. We've taken a closer look at the image quality and dynamic range impact of the move to a Stacked CMOS global shutter sensor. The optical construction incorporates six elements in four groups, including two aspherical elements that help to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion for improved sharpness and accurate rendering. All the functions I need to access regularly are accessible either via the physical controls or because they can be assigned to one of the five slots in the custom menu, that opens up when pressing the rocker switch style thumbwheel used to adjust exposure compensation. No, a camera that boots up in 2 seconds will still be able to capture 98% of the shots you want, but it’s one of the small features that adds up to make this camera a complete package. The rear layout of the camera has been completely redesigned and prioritizes a larger, more comfortable thumb grip along with easily accessible physical dials.

Having an additional light source can make a shot while not having an EVF will not likely break the shot. Not having a flash suits me just fine, the only time I missed it was when I was taking family shots at night in a bar or restaurant. The long-awaited installment in the popular series of fast, compact cameras, the Ricoh GR III continues the legacy of being a pocketable powerhouse, offering impressive image quality, fast response, and immense portability. As the higher end becomes less and less pocketable I’m also wondering about a compromise of something like an a7iii with a 24 2. My biggest annoyance with the design of the camera is the ease with which it can be accidentally turned on. If I forget the SD card in my Sony or Olympus, it means I won’t be taking any pictures that day, but not so for the GR3.

The GR III is ideally suited for street photographers, travel photographers, and those wanting a compact everyday carry. Instead, it's just the shutter button that requires a little bit more force than I'm used to, to actuate the shutter. Although I shoot various genres of photography with the GR3 , it was primarily designed for street shooters. Even at base iso (100), there's a bit of grain in the shadows that can get obvious once you start pushing the files.Sometimes I compensated for a miss focus or blurriness by turning the photos into black and white and adding some grain. Well, an EVF of course can be useful when one is shooting outdoors, especially given that the quality of the GR III’s LCD is not anything to shout about either but then a camera I like has to be one that I want to bring out and shoot . dot LCD features a capacitive touchscreen design for intuitive, familiar operation during shooting, playback, and menu navigation. And to be totally honest, my time with the Leica Q and Q2 (which comes with a native 28mm Summilux lens) probably had a hand in this too. But of course the GM5 is no more - but I can continue to manage as it still is a much more versatile camera than any GRD/GM can ever be.
