Angela Lin's spot-on accents conjure Singapore's eclectic culture and social hierarchy in this intriguing story about sleuthing maids. I like the way the book demonstrates the way female migrant domestic workers from the Philippines are often exploited and how powerless many of them are. Angel's character development seemed to center almost solely around the fact that she had a lesbian relationship and Donita, being a bit of a wild child, also felt redundant in a lot of her sections. Rather, it examines the lives of people who are part of a complex, often exploitative global system that devalues the lives of women and the profound responsibilities that are classified as women’s work—the rules these women must abide, both spoken and unspoken, their hopes and aspirations, and their varied grief. While the book gives an interesting snapshot of the situation faced by poor workers trying to follow the acknowledged and unacknowledged rules of a culture in which they are trying to assimilate, I kept waiting for more action. I also appreciated that the author shined a light on the poor treatment of overseas domestic workers and the Philippines’ controversial war on drugs. Still, there is a lot to like and I suspect many American readers will be finding out about the issues with domestic workers in other parts of the world for the first time, so it's nice to see the attention. Armond White from National Review criticized the series in his review, unfavorably contrasting its portrayal of racial tension and violence to period films like Boyz n the Hood and Do the Right Thing.I REALLY enjoyed this witty, moving murder mystery novel set among Sinapore's elite and the network of Filipino immigrant workers who serve them.
