About this deal

I received a gifted advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review as part of the book tour hosted by Insta Book Tours. The story follows four friends who, on their yearly holiday together, decide to go for a hike in Norway. Ben is a suburban middle-aged family man who takes a business trip up to rural Pennsylvania and books himself into his hotel. And Maggie – struggling financially with a toddler and dealing with an unreliable ex – realises she needs to let others pick up some of her slack.

With a cast of gloriously unlikeable characters, any one of them could be the murderer, and any of them could be dead. That wasn't so much the issue, but the name "Leif" being pronounced "life" instead of "lay-f" annoyed the hell out of me. The Hike was just incredible, a novel that features four women I sympathized and connected with, understanding the lifelong bonds we hold onto and the lifelong resentments we often keep close to our chests. Speaking of the plot, well-written and beautifully organized, this multiple POV storyline took me on quite the ride. This is a challenge and a half for these friends but Liz is hoping the challenge will help her forget about her worries at home.Done and dusted, this one was an absolute home run for me and I cannot recommend it enough for all of you out there looking for your next great read! His writing has appeared in Maxim, New York, The Atlantic, Bon Appetit, The Huffington Post, the Awl, Gawker, Penthouse, Playboy, Rolling Stone, and on Comedy Central, NPR, NBC, Yahoo! This year it’s Liz’s turn and she’s chosen something a bit different from the norm, climbing adventures in the Norwegian wilderness, in particular climbing Blafjell mountain. For starters, Lucy Clarke is queen of the destination thriller that centres female relationships, and this book focuses on a group solely of women. Seems silly as nobody would attempt to climb a mountain in bad weather without the right equipment and preparation.

Liz, in particular, is determined to get them all out on the hike despite knowing the difficulties they may face. The wildness and sense of sheer isolation was expressed with precision by Lucy Clarke, it was definitely my highlight. The group’s annual holidays usually involve beaches and resorts so no one other than Liz – who’s choice it was – is particularly enthralled with the idea of the hike, but all go along with it. In The Hike, Magary takes readers on a daring odyssey away from our day-to-day grind and transports them into an enthralling world propelled by heart, imagination, and survival. The most frightening thing about The Postmortal is that this could really happen--it's not a supernatural story, but it's even more terrifying than zombie apocalypse. I wish to thank HarperCollins Australia for providing me with a free copy of this book for review purposes. This was my first read by the author, and I enjoyed this one enough to want to check out her backlist.

First 25% is a little slow as we get into everyone’s backstories, but then the pace picks up exponentially and it moves along quite quickly after that. with the remaining group having to keep silent in a ‘ what happens on hike stays on hike‘ kinda thing. This page-turner deftly chronicles the fallout as it navigates back and forth through time and space while racing to its thrilling peak. We are given snippets of their back stories as the book goes on to gain insight, so you do care about them. They get tempted by thimbleberries, share leaf craft fun, observe the wonderful scenes around them, get a little lost and more.
