About this deal

Lots of background that really does not help solve the case at all, but makes for nice reading and makes the people more human. The Verlaque and Bonnet mystery novels are, now that I think about it, more about Provence and its culture, history and wines than it is about the mystery.

A page-turning mystery that transports you to the south of France with its lush portrait of a charming historic town, this continuation of the Provençal Mystery series captivates. Het verhaal begint heel “Cosy”, zoals ik al aangaf, maar als de professor dood wordt aangetroffen in zijn kantoor, neemt de spanning direct toe.Murder in the Rue Dumas" is more on the cozy end of the genre, but what a delightful place it holds. The prospective recipients and others close to Moutte make up a long list of suspects, but Verlaque isn't convinced any of the eager students or desperate teachers are capable of murder, and he must dig deeper. The head of Aix University's Theology is expected to announce both the winner of the prestigious Dumas fellowship, and, with his retirement, the appointment of his successor--who will acquire his very luxurious apartment. Death at the Château Bremont offers charming French locales, vivid characters and an intriguing who-done-it.

Moord in Rue Dumas’ is geen verkeerd verhaal en leest ook fijner weg dan het eerste deel ‘Dood op kasteel Brémont’. And as a personal peeve, this book makes sure on several occasions to assure us that the main female character is beautiful. In this way, the book reminded me quite a bit of David Lodge's books, which are sort of academic humor and are in fact referenced in this novel. Apart from probing the rivalries among the university’s faculty, Verlaque also looks into the possibility that the killer was an art thief.

Georges Moette, director of theology at the Université d'Aix--a very unpopular fellow with plenty of enemies. Most of the large cast of characters work in academia, so there's quite a bit of theological or otherwise very intelligent discussion. Another tedious repetition was the author showing off her knowledge of Aix, providing detailed steet-by-street, turn-by-turn routes various people walk through the city (sometimes including non-existent street names for no apparent reason). I enjoy college settings for murder mysteries and this has the added bonus of wrong doers and victims being part of the Theology Department at Universite' d'Aix. Professor Moutte, the Doyen of the School of Theology at the University of Aix, is found murdered in his office.
