About this deal

A. If the surface is dirty clean it first with a suitable Wood Cleaner. Otherwise, sand it with #100 Sanding Pad in the direction of the grain. If the wood is freshly sawn, you may need to start with something more coarse such as 120g sandpaper and work your way up with the Sanding Pads. A. Wood Stain is designed to penetrate into the wood and so the longer you leave it on the more it will soak in and the darker the wood will become. Wood can also only absorb so much stain before it becomes saturated and so any excess would then dry on the surface. This is why we recommend wiping the stain off after one or two minutes. However if the existing dye used was a good quality dye then it will probably have soaked a fair way down into the timber. To get around this you can apply what’s known as a pre-stain sealer or sanding sealer. This effectively helps to seal the surface and any open grains to give you a much more even finish. Our Wood Stain can be used to restore or change the colour of all types of interior and exterior wood. It can be used to stain old wood, as well as brand new wood and is easy and simple to use.

Wood Stains are a type of paint used to colour wood; a pigment is dissolved into water or solvent and applied to the wood. This is the basis behind traditional types of wood stain that will penetrate deep into wood. You will also find products designed for staining wood where the pigment has been added to a finishing agent such as an oil or varnish. However, these will just ‘tint’ the surface of the wood and so will wear off with use and will need to be re-applied. Types of Wood Stain The longer you leave the excess on the surface to soak in the deeper/richer the colour will appear. We therefore recommend removing it after only a minute or two and if it dries too light, you can apply another coat. However, if you apply too much and it dries too dark, it is much harder to sand, strip and then re-stain the wood! The Wood Stain instructions below explain thoroughly how to prepare wood, stain wood, and then how to protect wood afterwards. They will help you get the best results when using our Wood Stain. Preparing Wood for Staining You can obviously also sand this out to a certain degree, but realistically you may end up removing too much of the object to get rid of it totally.

Has the Timber Been Stained or has it Been Dyed?

Our Wood Stain is specially formulated to evenly dye wood, ensuring equal and even colour penetration throughout. The stain dries to a natural matt finish in only 10 minutes and has excellent coverage. Finishing wood after staining Use some 180 grit sandpaper to rub the object down, making sure that you remove any and all of the “gloss” effect that the varnish itself produces. This is also known as “deglossing”.

Brush on the sealer using long brush strokes running in the same direction as the wood grain. Gently brush off any excess sealer using a dry brush to prevent any visible brush strokes from showing up.Pine & Softwoods – Once you have prepared the surface as above you should apply a Pre-Stain Conditioner. This is because softwoods absorb wood stains in an uneven fashion and could come out blotchy once stained. If you don't have a conditioner, you should wipe the wood down with a wet cloth so the wood becomes damp. After the wood dries, sand it smooth using a #100 Fine Sanding Pad - this process helps reduce the uneven absorbtion of stain often found in softwoods.

After staining the wood, it should be finished with a varnish, oil or wax. The Wood Stain is colourfast once dry but by applying a finish you can: If you are simply restaining wood objects or surfaces with a similar shade of stain or one that’s slightly darker then, firstly, you will need to establish what’s currently covering the item you’re working on – follow the steps above to find this out. Wood stains generally tend to be essentially a coloured varnish, meaning that they sit on top of the surface their applied to. Apply it using the manufacturers instructions and once it’s fully cured, sand it flat, making sure any and all edges are feathered out nicely. 2. Sealing Timber Prior to Staining You can also use a decent paint and varnish stripper such as the Eco Solutions Paint and Varnish Stripper we ourselves regularly use. After you’ve stained the wood your desired colour you’ll then need to seal and protect the wood using a finish of your choice. We have a wide variety you can choose from; Once you have stained the wood you should finish it for best results. A wood finish will provide additional protection to the wood and really enhance the colour of the wood stain. We have a range of products you can use after staining the wood; Once all lightly sanded off you should have a great base for your stain. 3 A. Applying a new Coat of Wood Stain the Same Tone or Darker than the Existing Stain
